As you may remember, the objective for Week 4 was to computer your carbon footprint using the EPA Carbon Footprint Calculator. One feature of the calculator is that it allows you to see the effects of various actions you can perform to reduce emissions, both in terms of pounds of carbon dioxide eliminated and dollars saved. We will focus on one such action for this week.
The objective for Week 7 is to enable the power management features on your computer. The EPA recommends setting monitors to turn off after 5 to 20 minutes of inactivity, and computers to enter sleep after 15 to 60 minutes of inactivity.
In Windows 10 changes to the above settings can be accomplished by the following steps:1. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of your screen.2. Click the Settings icon. 3. Select “System.” 4. Select “Power and Sleep.” 5. Under “Screen,” reduce the times after which the screen will shut off to 5 minutes or less for both battery power and for when the computer is plugged in. 6. Under “Sleep,” reduce the times for both to settings to 15 minutes or less.
Similar settings are also available on a Mac:1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.2. Click Energy Saver.3. Set the time after which the display turns off.4. Make sure the option “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” is checked.
Stay safe and healthy!
