Eligibility

Competitive fellowships and grants will be awarded to students (U.S. citizen and international students with approved immigration status) enrolled full-time at any accredited public or private college or university (including community colleges) within the United States,  The number of available awards may vary each year depending on available resources and number of qualified applicants. The GWI Academy reserves the right to not award any fellowship or grant within any year.    All publications must meet the mission of GWI Academy in promoting de-centralized green water-infrastructures in urban areas.  Immediate family members of GWI Academy Board of Directors and employees are not eligible for these programs.

Fellowships

All research must meet the mission of GWI Academy in promoting de-centralized green water infrastructures in urban areas. Applications must be submitted as one PDF document. Any incomplete applications will be returned and not reviewed.    We will acknowledge receipt of all applications within 30 days.

  • GWI Academy Fellowships are monies that are supplied to a college or university where the student is enrolled, and administered by that entity on behalf of the student.
  • Fellowship monies can be used for educational expenses directly related to greenwater- infrastructure courses or research related expenses.
  • Educational expenses directly related to greenwater-infrastructure would include tuition and books for courses with topics pertaining to greenwater-infrastructure; general education courses do not qualify.
  • Research expenses can include travel for field research (including study-abroad programs), costs for field assistants, and travel to and from conferences.
  • The college or university cannot claim any part of the Fellowship as overhead expenses.
  • Fellowships are not based on financial need but based on the applicant’s research topic, scholarship abilities, GPA, and letters of recommendations.
  • The amounts of the fellowships vary, from $500 for an undergraduate student, up to $2,000 for a Ph.D. student.  The exact amounts and numbers available will be posted annually on our website.
  • Fellowship monies are provided for use during one school year (August 1 – July 31).
  • In the case of a degree being awarded prior to the expiration of the Fellowship period (i.e. prior to July 31), the Fellowship monies expire as of degree conferment date.
  • Any unspent Fellowship monies must be returned to GWI Academy.
  • In the case of unspent funds and the student continuing their education beyond the expiration of the Fellowship period (i.e. July 31), the student can contact their GWI Academy Fellowship Administrator to request continuation of the balance of the funds (for good cause) beyond that period.  An example of a good cause would be field research that continues into August.
  • All Fellowship recipients are required to provide a report to GWI Academy related to their use of the Fellowship monies.  These reports are due to GWI Academy within one month of the expiration of the fellowship period.
  • Prior recipients of GWI Academy Fellowships can reapply for future fellowships but must show they have complied with all GWI Academy policies in regards to their prior funding period, show that they have made substantial progress in their research, and provide a status report on their research, in addition to all other required documents.
  • If a prior recipient is applying for a new Fellowship for a new degree program, i.e. prior award was as an undergraduate and now they are a graduate student, they need to be very specific in their cover letter and provide a new research proposal.
  • Recipients can only be awarded a Fellowship a maximum of two times throughout their entire school career – undergraduate or graduate work, regardless if the school career was continuous or interrupted.
  • GWI Academy will post on its website the names, school affiliations (including status as undergraduate or graduate student), photo, and research topic of all recipients.
  • GWI Academy must be acknowledged within any publications or presentations related to the student’s research.
  • Students receiving GWI Academy grants are not eligible to apply for GWI Academy fellowships.
  • The application package consists of the following documents:

    • Two letters of recommendations which speak to the student’s abilities and scholarship.  One letter must be from the student’s advisor (in the case of an undergraduate) or, in the case of a graduate student, the graduate student’s committee chair/advisor.
    • A copy of the student’s unofficial transcript for the school in which the student is currently enrolled.  If the student has been enrolled for less than a year at the time of application, then high school transcripts or transcripts from other colleges or universities should be submitted.
    • A research proposal, not to exceed 3 single spaced pages (no less than 10 point font, Times New Roman).  The 3-page limit does not include reference list nor figures.  Up to 2 figures can be included after the references but cited within the proposal.   The research proposal should be related to the student’s degree research project, i.e. in the case of a Master’s or Ph.D. student, a 3-page version of their degree’s required research proposal would be required.
    • In the case of a student just entering their degree program, the name of their intended school should be provided.  If the application is accepted and a Fellowship awarded, a letter from the school verifying their admission and enrollment will be required before the funds can be distributed to the school.
